3. Among the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act is to coordinate compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Section 106 requires agencies to consider effects of Federal projects on historic properties.
Do you have any input you would like to offer regarding historic properties in the study area and possible project affects on them?

The two-tiered alternatives analysis process began with consideration of 11 alternative alignments in 4 corridors.

As a result of the study and public input received to date, the number of alternatives being considered in Tier 2 of the evaluation has been reduced to 5 alignments in 3 major corridors.

The 5 alignments and key assumptions for each are presented below.

TEMPE STUDY AREA
 


1. Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Bus Rapid Transit

Key Assumptions:

• Rubber tire, clean fuel, stream-lined bus rapid transit vehicles to be used
• Limited-stop bus service to improve travel times and increase travel speeds
• Buses will run in exclusive guideway for a major portion of the route
• UPRR right-of-way lease or purchase will be required for use
• Provides a connection from Downtown Tempe to a
park-and-ride near Loop 202
(Santan Freeway)


 

2. Mill/Kyrene Bus Rapid Transit

Key Assumptions:

• Rubber tire, clean fuel, stream-lined bus rapid transit vehicles to be used
• Limited-stop bus service approximately every half-mile or mile to improve travel times
and increase travel speeds
• Will operate in existing traffic lanes
• Provides a connection from Downtown Tempe to a park-and-ride near Loop 202
(Santan Freeway)

 

 

3. Mill Avenue Modern Streetcar

Key Assumptions:

• Electric rail vehicles share auto traffic lanes
• Functions as a pedestrian-friendly local circulator with frequent stops
• Can potentially interline with the existing 20-mile Light Rail Starter Line which would eliminate
the need to transfer
• Potential for future extension to Chandler and along Rio Salado Parkway

 

 

4. Rural Road Bus Rapid Transit

Key Assumptions:

• Rubber tire, clean fuel, stream-lined bus rapid transit vehicles to be used
• Limited-stop bus service every mile or half mile to improve travel times and increase travel speeds
• Buses will run in a semi-exclusive outside lane that also allows autos to make right turns
• Provides a connection from ASU/Downtown Tempe to park and ride locations near the
Chandler Fashion Center and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway)

 

 

5. Rural Road Light Rail Transit

Key Assumptions:

• Can interline with existing 20-mile Light Rail Starter Line eliminating the need to transfer
• Larger vehicles with capability to couple together in a 3-car train offering greater
passenger-carrying capacity
• Limited stop service to improve travel times and increase travel speeds
• Operates in exclusive guideway alongside mixed vehicle traffic; shares left turn lanes with autos
• Potential for future extension into Chandler
